USI Wireless Minneapolis

I'm monkeying around with the Minneapolis Wi-fi network. I got a 1Meg/upload/download connection for $19.95 a month. Plus I'm renting their modem for $5/month.

Not necessary, but it does help a lot. More power output and a MUCH better receiver. I can see wireless nets I've never seen before.

So far, so good. I get the full meg, but they do throttle you. I'll have to drive around and try it just on the laptop or the phone.

You can log in with your modem at home and with one other pc/device as a roamer.
I have both cable and USI wifi on the lan here at home. Just pick which gateway you want to use to get out to the world.

The modem has a "firewall"built in and does NAT...so it's an all in one box almost. Only has one ethernet port though.

The USl wifi doesn't seem to interfere with my home wifi net. Though I had to move my home wifi to ch. 9.

The USI stuff is on ch. 1. Right now i'm wifi on my net to the lan and back out the USI wifi. They say to keep the modem 20 feet from your access point. Mine's only about 10 feet.

Picture of the modem is attached. It's bigger than I thought it would be. About the size of a can of sweet potatoes.

Anyway, if this works out well, I could see it replacing cable internet. They offer a 3 Meg service for $29.99 (with 1 Meg upstream).
